The United Way of Carlisle and Cumberland County has formed its first Student Leadership Council. 26 students in grades 6 through 12 have volunteered to serve on the 2010 / 2011 Student Leadership Council. The meetings began in October 2010.
The Student Leadership Council serves as a link between the communities that United Way represents, and the students research what issues they wish to work on. These issues can range from homelessness and violence to education and health, or any other area that they choose to work on. The council meets to work on community projects that they establish to target the issues that they have chosen.
There will be opportunities for leadership education from local business professionals, and the students will have an opportunity to develop fundraisers to fund a special project or area that they have chosen for the year.
The 2010/2011 Student Leadership Council recently held interviews with the three finalists for the grant that they were rewarding to agencies that help individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency.
Congratulations to Carlisle C.A.R.E.S.! They will be receiving a $3,000 grant from the funds that were raised through the t-shirt sales, Kohl's celebrity gift wrapping and & the M & T Bank Central PA Glee Competition.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2011-2012 Student Leadership Council. The Council is open to students in grades 6 through 12. Call Sherrie at 243-4805 or sherrie@carlisleunitedway.org .
